3 Days | Dusty & Diverse | Hikers, Bikers, and Off-Roaders
In Dinosaurland, the best way to see the sights is to get off the pavement. Whether you prefer the quiet rhythm of a hiking trail, the high-speed flow of mountain bike singletrack, or the raw power of an OHV, Vernal’s trail system is one of the most diverse in the West. This 3-day itinerary is designed to give you a taste of everything—from otherworldly sandstone formations to grueling mountain climbs and hidden arches. Strap on your boots, grab your helmet, and prepare to cover some serious ground.

Day 1
Singletrack and Surreal Sunsets
Morning: Dinosaur Trackway Trail Start your trip with a walk where giants once stepped. The Dinosaur Trackway Trail (0.90 miles) is a quick and easy hike perfect for all ages. It leads you to a site where hundreds of dinosaur footprints are preserved in the stone—a must-see introduction to the area.
Afternoon: Fantasy Canyon Drive over to Fantasy Canyon for a hike that feels more like a trip to Mars than Utah. The intricate, delicate stone formations here are unlike anything else on the planet.
-
Red Pine Creek Trail: For those looking for a bit more elevation, tackle this 2.1-mile trail (900 ft gain) for panoramic views of the surrounding wilderness.

Day 2
Mountain Bike Mania
The Local Legends It’s time to hit the dirt on two wheels. Start with Jazz Chrome Molly, one of the most famous trails in the Vernal system. It offers beautiful scenery, heart-pounding climbs, and fast descents.
-
Level Up: If you have the legs for it, add J-Boy and Handsome Cabin Boy to your loop for an even more memorable ride.
-
Family Alternative: If you’re riding with kids or are new to the sport, the Dry Fork Nature Trail offers a fun, quick, and scenic alternative.

Day 3
OHV Power
Butch Cassidy Loop (Asphalt Ridge) We’re diving into the heart of Vernal’s OHV country. The Butch Cassidy Loop is a 24-mile adventure that will push your machine to the limits. It’s not for beginners—expect steep pitches and challenging terrain—but the reward is some of the best scenic views in the Uinta Basin.
-
Intermediate Alternative: For a slightly shorter ride with a massive payoff, head to the Moonshine Arch Trail. This 9.22-mile trail leads you to a towering, natural sandstone arch that makes for the perfect photo op.
