Boating

Vernal

Boating, Paddleboarding, and Watersports

While most people come to Vernal for the fossils, the locals know that the real magic happens on the water. In the heart of Dinosaurland, three world-class reservoirs—Steinaker, Red Fleet, and Starvation State Parks—offer a stunning prehistoric backdrop for every kind of water lover. Whether you are carving through the glass-still surface on wakeboards, paddling into hidden red rock coves, or simply lounging on a sandy high-desert beach, our emerald waters provide the ultimate oasis in the rugged Uinta Basin.

The Big Three: Vernal’s Premier Lakes

Steinaker State Park

Vernal's Beach

Located just 7 miles north of downtown, Steinaker is the local favorite for a high-energy day on the water. It is famous for its massive sandy beach and clear, warm summer waters.

Best For: Wakeboarding, tubing, and family beach days.

The Experience: Head to the Double Shaka Aqua Park—a floating inflatable playground that is a massive hit with kids.

Facilities: Modern boat ramps, lakeside camping, and a swimming dock.

Rentals: On-site rentals available for paddleboards and kayaks.

Red Fleet State Park

Little Lake Powell

Known for its dramatic red sandstone cliffs that dive directly into the water, Red Fleet offers a visual experience that rivals Southern Utah without the massive crowds.

Best For: Kayaking, paddleboarding, and "No-Wake" exploring.

The Experience: Navigate to the north shore to find the Dinosaur Trackway, where you can pull your boat right up to the shore and walk among 200-million-year-old tracks.

Facilities: High-quality docks and secluded "wakeless" coves perfect for a quiet afternoon swim.

A bit further west near Duchesne, "Starvation" is a giant of the Basin, offering 3,500 acres of deep, blue water.

Best For: Jet skiing, walleye fishing, and long-distance cruising.

The Experience: Explore the jagged rock alcoves and hidden coves that give this reservoir its "rugged" reputation.

Facilities: Full-service amenities including a 3D archery course and developed campgrounds.

Flaming Gorge National Recreation Area

Just a short, scenic drive north of Vernal, Flaming Gorge is a bucket-list destination for serious boaters.

  • The Scale: 91 miles of water stretching into Wyoming.

  • The View: Cruise through Red Canyon, where vibrant walls rise 1,500 feet above your boat.

  • Marinas: Cedar Springs and Lucerne Valley offer full-service rentals, from patio boats to high-performance jet skis.

Whitewater & River Floating

If you prefer moving water, the Green River offers world-class experiences:

Scenic Floating: The section below the Flaming Gorge Dam is crystal clear and perfect for gentle rafts and fly fishing.

Whitewater Rafting: For adrenaline, the Gates of Lodore and Split Mountain inside Dinosaur National Monument offer legendary rapids.

Boater Safety

To protect Utah's waterways from invasive species, all watercraft users must comply with current state laws. Please note that AIS fees are no longer collected by the DMV; all enrollment must be completed through the Division of Wildlife Resources (DWR).

  • Annual Mussel-Aware Course (Mandatory for ALL): Every person launching a watercraft—including paddleboards, kayaks, and canoes—must complete the 2026 Utah Mussel-Aware Boater Course annually. You are required to display your certificate of completion on the dashboard of your launch vehicle.

  • Motorized AIS Enrollment: Owners of motorized boats must enroll in the Utah AIS Program annually through the DWR.

  • Decal Requirements: Once enrolled, motorized vessels must display a current-year AIS decal. This is separate from your standard boat registration.

  • Youth PWC Requirements: Operators aged 12–17 must complete a state-approved boating safety course to operate a Personal Watercraft (Jet Ski). Operators aged 12–15 must also be under the direct on-board supervision of an adult (18+).

  • Clean, Drain, Dry: It is a legal requirement to remove all drain plugs and sea strainers before leaving the ramp area of any body of water.

Your Dinosaurland adventure doesn't have to end at the water’s edge. Whether you’re looking for a lakeside campground near the docks or a comfortable hotel in downtown Vernal, find the perfect home base for your trip and discover the best local dining to refuel after a day on the lake.
