During the Eocene Epoch, approximately 38 to 50 million years ago, the area was submerged beneath a vast lake known as Lake Uinta. Over time, sediments eroded from the surrounding highlands were deposited into the lake bed, eventually solidifying into layers of sandstone, siltstone, and shale.
As the lake receded and the land uplifted, the softer layers of rock eroded away, leaving behind the more resistant sandstone formations. These formations, ranging from towering pillars and arches to whimsical hoodoos and balanced rocks, create a surreal and otherworldly landscape.
