The Experience: Ashley Gorge Via Ferrata

Via Ferrata Vernal

Located just 15 minutes north of Vernal within the stunning Ashley Gorge, this via ferrata is famous for its dramatic verticality and the breathtaking contrast between the red sandstone cliffs and the emerald-green water below.

The Route

The course is designed to be progressive. It usually starts with a brief "ground school" to get you used to the double-carabiner system. Once you're on the wall, you’ll encounter:

  • Vertical Ascents: Climbing iron rungs like a giant ladder pinned to a skyscraper.

  • Traverses: Sideways shuffling across narrow ledges where the exposure (the "drop") is significant.

  • Aerial Bridges: Often the highlight of the trip, these wire bridges require a bit of balance and a lot of courage.

The Views

Vernal is known as the "Dinosaur Capital of the World," and the landscape looks the part. While you’re clipped to the side of the cliff, you’ll have a bird’s-eye view of the Green River winding through the canyon. Keep an eye out for ospreys or bighorn sheep—they’re usually much more graceful on the cliffs than we are.

FAQ

A Guided Thrill

Because these cliffs are steep and the gear is specialized, these experiences are best for guided for adventures. While the "Iron Path" makes the climbing accessible, having a professional guide is what allows you to focus on confronting the heights and enjoying the view rather than worrying about your carabiners.

It’s a heart-pounding way to see the Uintah Basin, but you’ll be in safe hands the whole way up.
