What to Expect on the Wall

The course is progressive by design. You'll start with a short “ground school” to learn the double-carabiner, continuous-belay system. You're always clipped to the steel cable. On the wall, you’ll encounter:

Vertical Ascents: Climbing iron rungs pinned straight up the cliff face, like a ladder bolted to a skyscraper.
Traverses: Sideways shuffles across narrow ledges, with significant exposure below you.
Aerial Bridges: Wire suspension bridges strung across open air. The highlight of the trip for many, requiring a bit of balance and a lot of courage.

Do I Need a Guide for Ashley Gorge Via Ferrata?

Technically, no—but practically, yes. The Ashley Gorge Via Ferrata is actually Utah's first public via ferrata, meaning it is free to access and not restricted to a private resort. However, "public" doesn't mean you can just start climbing. To go without a guide, you must meet several strict requirements:

Mandatory Safety Gear: You are required by Uintah County rules to use a UIAA-certified via ferrata "Energy Absorbing System" (EAS), a mountaineering harness, and a helmet. Standard rock climbing slings or "DIY" tethers are strictly prohibited because they cannot handle the specific fall forces of a via ferrata.
Waivers & Registration: Even if you aren't with a guide, you must sign a county waiver and carry it on your person while climbing.
