Paint the Skies, Storm the Streets
Every August, the skies above Utah's Dinosaurland fill with an explosion of color for Dinah "SOAR" Days. Often called Vernal's annual "Dinosaur Days" festival by out-of-town visitors, this massive community weekend proudly holds the title of Utah's largest hot air balloon festival.
Whether you are coming to watch massive balloons rise against the high-desert landscape, shop local vendor markets, or put on a T-Rex suit to sprint down Main Street, this insider’s playbook covers exactly how to navigate the weekend like a local.

3 Can't-Miss Moments
The Sunrise Balloon Launches
When: Friday, Saturday, and Sunday mornings at 6:30 AM (weather permitting)
Where: Vernal Middle School Field / Allen Park
Set an early alarm, grab a local coffee, and get to the field while the morning air is still crisp. Watching dozens of massive hot air balloons inflate and lift off simultaneously against the high-desert sky is the undisputed crown jewel of the weekend.

The Dino Dash
When: Friday evening at 7:30 PM
Where: Downtown Vernal Main Street
Hundreds of runners in full, head-to-toe inflatable dinosaur costumes sprinting down a historic highway. It is pure, hilarious chaos with a serious community mission: capturing an official Guinness World Record.
The Great World Record Showdown
This isn't just your average, everyday hometown parade—it's a high-energy celebration with a giant goal. Vernal is rallying the herd to officially smash the Guinness World Record for the largest gathering of people dressed as dinosaurs (currently held by Palm Beach, Florida with 468).
The community came incredibly close during a previous attempt with 800 dinosaurs on the streets, but they were narrowly denied the official title on a strict counting technicality. This time around, organizers are much more prepared and fully intend to officially obliterate the record.
Want to Join the History Books?
Anyone can join the Dino Dash! You just need to register online ahead of the weekend and provide your own full, head-to-toe inflatable or plush dinosaur costume to be officially counted toward the world record. If you aren't running, pull up a lawn chair along Main Street early to secure a front-row curb spot to watch the madness unfold.

The Main Street Balloon Glow
When: Friday and Saturday evening at dusk (around 8:30 PM)
Where: Downtown Vernal Main Street
Right after the dinosaurs clear out, balloon pilots park their baskets directly on the pavement. As darkness falls, they ignite their burners in unison, lighting up the giant balloons from the inside to create a glowing, magical street festival atmosphere.
Beyond the glowing balloons on the asphalt, the entire downtown strip transforms into a massive, high-energy block party. Main Street comes alive with a lineup of local food trucks, pop-up artisan markets for night shopping, and live street music that keeps the festive atmosphere buzzing long after the sun goes down.

Don't let the fun end when the balloons come down! Vernal is packed with incredible local flavor and adventure that deserves more than a day trip. Turn your festival weekend into a true high-desert vacation by diving into our legendary local food scene, booking a cozy place to unwind, and exploring the endless dinosaur tracks, fossils, and scenic trails that make this region world-famous. There is so much more "dino fun" waiting for you around every corner—plan your perfect itinerary below!
